I love to see these ladies, but like you I assume that they are wealthy - or they have been. And they are dressing for a climate and (as you point out) a lifestyle that we don't have here.

My partner's mother is now 90, and I am getting an interesting insight into the issues of staying stylish as you age. She lives alone, and looks after herself, but has huge difficulty buying clothes now, because she can't try things on by herself, and she feels that things never hang right on her older frame. She lives in a very hot climate, so can't wear more than a cotton dress most of the time. And shoes can become a problem once your balance isn't reliable - you need a certain style of shoe, which is expensive and perhaps not very fashionable. So my partner makes her a couple of simple elegant cotton dresses every year. She may not make Ari's blog, but she feels comfortable and stylish and suits the climate and the way that she lives.M-Hhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18409916623998907121noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7639104039967253280.post-58907506334770175262011-11-15T10:43:53.278+11:002011-11-15T10:43:53.278+11:00My Dad has a 'friend' who always looks so ...My Dad has a 'friend' who always looks so very well put together. She told me once her secret is to dress only once a day and to dress for the most dressed-up event of the day. She said sometimes she is overdressed but better than the opposite. I've tried it and it works quite well.Brendaknitshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05810199856912743651noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7639104039967253280.post-21299060255492228502011-11-15T07:37:33.459+11:002011-11-15T07:37:33.459+11:00You both dress well, and stylishly every day (well...You both dress well, and stylishly every day (well every day that I have seen you)!

I often worry about the superficiality of my interest in fashion, and certainly worry about my continued expenditure of money on it, but elegance and beauty make life so much better...

Thanks for the link to advanced style - it is a wonderful blog!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7639104039967253280.post-52870324953994473232011-11-15T07:25:21.551+11:002011-11-15T07:25:21.551+11:00Another insightful and interesting post Lyn. It is not something I particularly do, although I try to look respectable when I leave the house (!) but I admire women who are able to do that, and want to do it. I think my personal style is generic and not interesting, whereas if I had an interesting style, I'd be more likely to dress up, if that makes sense.

I think Ari makes a good point about style being one way to fight invisibility and that is where the notion of style gains an importance. If it makes people feel more confident when they are dressed stylishly, then that is the value I think.

I also agree with your point about location - but I reckon if Ari came to Sydney you would totally feature on the blog!Rose Redhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08510204661811765499noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7639104039967253280.post-714366621431369872011-11-14T19:23:25.935+11:002011-11-14T19:23:25.935+11:00Hi,

Many of these ladies aren't super wealthy, they are in fact very thrifty and creative. I started advanced style to change perceived notions about aging. The fact that these women get up and dress everyday shows that they take pride in their appearance, that they are confident and full of vitality. Style is just a starting point, a visual vehicle to change people's ideas and show that as we age we should'nt be treated as invisible, but rather envied for acquired wisdom and experience.

Every city has incredible older people. I really do appreciate your commentary!

AriArihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01020057512468238766noreply@blogger.com
